The Crossways Community Trust were estastic to announce last week that they had achieved the first fundraising milestone for the purchase of Crossways from the Presbyterian Church.
The three-way agreement between the Trust, the Church and the Wellington City Council obliged the Trust to raise $450,000 by 31 March 2008.
Bill Southworth, Chair of the Trust, announced to a public meeting on the 27th March that they had achieved their objective - and in fact, some $470,000 has been raised from philanthropic trusts and community donations.
The Crossways team has done a fantastic job of raising awareness and collecting money - everyone in the neighbourhood will have seen the various Open days, and many people have bought jam and raffle tickets from the regular Chaffers Market stall. Both the Trustees and everyone who has assisted the project should be congratulated.
Bill Southworth said that the Council still had to give final approval for the fundraising to be acknowledged in the three-way agreement, but he was hopeful of this occurring by 31 March. He noted that the Trust is on track to raise the balance of the likely $1.5 million purchase price, and to be in a position to complete the purchase from the Church in October 2008.
