A MAJOR EARTHQUAKE IN WELLINGTON?

“AFTERSHOCK”

The Mt Victoria Civil Defence & Crossways Trust will screen this documentary by the Gibson Group at New Crossways on

Thursday 4 December: 7.30pm

Wellington sits on a dangerous active earthquake fault. This film visualises what would happen to Wellington if there were a major earthquake.

Spend the evening watching this film and find out how you can protect yourself and your family if the big one hits, and the civil defence needs in Mt Victoria.

A great wakeup call for the community!

Join us at Crossways, 6 Roxburgh Street, Mt Victoria - up the stairs this Thursday.

HONE TUWHARE - Successful fundraiser at the Paramount

A successful fundraiser was held at the Paramount Cinema on Sunday 30 November. Due to the popularity of Gaylene Preston's "Hone Tuwhare - No Other Lips" we sold out our first session and promptly organised a 2nd screening to follow.

Once again Gaylene Preston spoke about the film and answered questions, at both screenings and we heard readings of Hone's poems. A short film loaned by Bruce Gatward-Cook of Hone's poem "drunk" was also screened during the first session.

DVD's of Gaylene's films - Hone Tuwhare, Lovely Rita and War Stories were available on the day for purchase - great Christmas presents!

A huge thank you to Gaylene for her ongoing support of Crossways and the importance of community; the Paramount Cinema, Bruce Gatward-Cook, to all who attended and to our volunteers particulary Pat McGiven for making this fundraiser a success.

New Crossways Officially Opened!!

As part of the Meet the Candidates event last Thursday (16 Oct), the New Crossways Trust chair, Bill Southworth, officially opened the building with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Two of the stalwart members of the old Crossways management committee, Ralph and Margaret Pannett, did the honours of pronouncing the building opened, and were thanked by Bill on behalf of the community for their enormous efforts over the years.

In addition to their many years of work on the management committee, Ralph and Margaret made a huge contribution to the campaign to save Crossways. While this was ultimately unsuccessful, the time and effort Ralph and Margaret put into the campaign helped make it possible for Crossways to relocate to its new premises in Roxburgh Street.

The community owes them a debt of gratitude for all their work over the last three decades.

Grand Opening for the New Crossways & a Candidates Meeting 2008

MVRA together with Mt Cook Mobilized and the New Crossways Trust hosted the candidates for Wellington Central at New Crossways, 6 Roxburgh St, Mt Victoria.

Thursday 16 October, 7.30pm

The Mt Victoria and Mt Cook communities ran a hugely entertaining Meet The Candidates meeting at new Crossways community centre. Ten candidates for the Wellington Central electorate informed and entertained a full house, punctuated with sloganeering, backchat and interjections, as well as considered policy and in-depth discussion of the issues facing New Zealand.

As the first public meeting for the new Crossways it was a great way to welcome the neighbourhood to our new community facility. It was also a great way to meet a number of great people from Mt Cook Mobilised, who joined us to grill the candidates on local and national issues.

The Candidates that attended were;

Heather Roy - ACT
Richard Wallis - Alliance
Sue Kedgley - Greens
Grant Robertson - Labour
Stephen Franks - National
Vaughan Smith - United Future
Don Franks - Workers Party
Grant Brookes - RAM
Rebekah Clement - Kiwi Party

An apology was received from the Libertarianz candidate Barnard Darnton.
